In March 2019 CIREG is organising two training workshops on Energy and Water modelling in Accra and Ouagadougou. Both workshops will be hosted by the West African Science Service Center on Climate Adaptation and Land Use (WASCAL) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). One training session will take place in Accra, Ghana, from 11th to 15th March 2019 and another one in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 18th to 22nd March 2019.

The workshop will provide hands-on training in using SEI's Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning system (LEAP) and the Water Evaluation and Planning system (WEAP) software tool. Target audience are energy and water management experts in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger and Togo. Focus of the workshop will be on integrating LEAP and WEAP modelling for policy support in the Volta basin. It will be part of a series of workshops in 2019 and 2020.

Aside from providing training on LEAP and on WEAP, the aim is to bring stakeholders together towards co-development of WEAP/LEAP model in the Volta basin for policy support. It will engage with participants in research for climate-resilient, renewable based energy and water management systems. To do so, applications of both models will be developed, within the course of the training and afterwards, to examine cases of Water – Energy Nexus under climate change which are of interest to the participants.
